Labor Productivity – Productivity Factor (PF) according to #AACEI equals Actual Productivity divided by Baseline or Planned Productivity.

Labor Productivity – Performance Factor (PF), according to Schwartzkoff equals Estimated Unit Rate divided by Actual Rate.

Labor Productivity – A simple KPI is the ratio of Planned Man-Hours divided by Actual man-hours – “Earned over Burned.”

Labor Productivity – There are several KPI’s that can be used for project/construction management.

Labor Productivity – Use of labor productivity KPI facilitates proactive project management.

Labor Productivity – As a leading Indicator, Labor Productivity represents an excellent management tool.

PROJECT PROFESSIONALS POSTING RESUMPTION

McLaughlin and McLaughlin [M&M] is pleased to announce that they will resume postings at their blog, Project Professionals.  Since mid-2013, M&M has been heavily involved with several large assignments [Construction claims regarding several power plant projects].  Now that workload permits, new blog postings will be offered.

M&M wishes to remind followers (new and ongoing) that there are many offerings at the Project Professional site.  They are organized by what we call Subject Series.

PRODUCTIVITY SERIES REVIEW (reissue 3)

McLaughlin and McLaughlins Project Professionals blog has a series of posts regarding labor/labour productivity.  Over the last six months we have added to this popular series.  The first summary was posted in June 2011.  There was a reissue in October 2011, and again in November 2011.  Readership has continued to increase.  Consequently, we are reissuing this updated and expanded post as an overview of the labor/labour productivity series.

Labor/Labour Productivity – Overtime Impacts (Part 10)

MANAGERIAL CONSIDERATIONS

This is the tenth posting regarding labor/labour productivity and disruption.  This contribution provides managerial considerations or issues regarding the impact of overtime on labor productivity.  The Subject Series can be viewed here.

The impact of overtime on labor productivity is a relevant and serious consideration in many aspects of program and project management.  In general, some of the points of concern include:

  • “Project Management Plan – basis for the plan and related resource requirements”
  • “Changed Work – both prospective and retrospective planning and pricing”
  • “Delay Mitigation – planning and analyzing the options and related viability”
  • “Schedule Recovery – methods, options and viability”
  • “Forensic Analysis – claims for delay, acceleration and related impacts.”

Understanding the impact on labor/labour productivity and cost due to overtime is an essential skill related to both planning and forensic analyses.  Remember, the impact on productivity applies to all hours worked, not just the hours associated with premium time costs.  Hence, often the productivity impact is more costly than the premium time compensation component of the payroll costs.

The impact of overtime on labor/labour productivity is not limited to construction field labor.  It presents in engineering, programming, consulting and other professional man-hours. [Read more…]

MANAGING RISK OF DELAY – Earned Value and Schedule Performance Indicators (Part 7)

This post is the seventh in a series of discussions regarding various aspects of time management as it relates to the risk of delay.  More specifically, we have titled the series MANAGING RISK OF DELAY [Subject Series], since we focus heavily on the managerial aspects of program / project management.  This post addresses some managerial tools relative to the integrated nature of time management using critical path and earned value management.

The challenge associated with managing all (critical and non-critical path) work is common to virtually all projects.  This challenge is true for most project management situations.  It is intensified in the case of larger and more complex projects.  Examples include Lump Sum Turn Key (LSTK), Engineer Procure Construct (EPC) and other similarly executed projects.  In addition to the normal issues associated with bulk progress, actions or inactions by the owner can add considerable complexity to this challenge.  Over the past seven years, M&M has program/project managed five projects exceeding $100 million (USD) in investment value (total installed cost).  Thus, practical/practioner experience is engendered in this discussion/post.
